UWL Computing and Engineering students develop new skills at Enhancement Week workshops
Intro
More than 100 students from UWL's School of Computing and Engineering (SCE) recently participated in a range of special workshops looking at how to successfully apply for jobs, manage their social media presence and improve their first aid knowledge.
Article body
UWL is committed to ensuring that students have the chance to excel in everything they do and we do this by broadening their knowledge and developing new work-related skills. The collaboration between staff and students was excellent,”
said Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr Anastasia Sofroniou, who is Professional Engagement Lead for SCE.
Sessions with SCE Career Consultant Bernie Laffey provided students with insights on effective CV and cover letter writing, as well as advice on how to succeed at interviews. Students also enjoyed a Career Consultant-led session offering them guidance on how to use LinkedIn to build a strong network. UWL’s Women in Science, Technology and Mathematics (WInSTEM) members were also present to help with the after activities for these sessions.
I found the training on handling interviews particularly helpful. I learned a lot about how to answer questions so I will now be better able do it right in a real world,”
said one student who attended.
During two first aid workshops, SCE students learned how to respond correctly to emergencies in a laboratory or workplace such as a cardiac arrest, a heart attack, bleeding, electric shock, epilepsy and allergic reactions.
One student who took part said:
The course was great, really useful - we learned what to do should an emergency arise, such as using defibrillators, EpiPens and the technique for performing CPR.”
Another attendee added:
I learned so many new things regarding health and safety and it was also a really good way to refresh my memory.”
A day of team building pursuits rounded off the week, with students taking part in fun, problem-solving activities including puzzles and a treasure hunt.
The activities on offer were not only insightful but also fun. “I enjoyed meeting new students from our school and collaborating with them in our groups. I really enjoyed the treasure hunt – it was a great team-building activity,”
said one student who took part.
