It’s a wrap: UWL’s students are the stars of the show for ARTSFEST 2023
Intro
The University of West London’s ARTSFEST, which showcases the creativity and coursework of final year students from the London College of Music (LCM) and the London School of Film, Media, and Design (LSFMD), took place in venues across London between May and July.
Main body
On the programme were degree show exhibitions, concerts, and musical theatre performances, demonstrating the talents and vision of the Class of 2023.
One of the first events featured final year BA (Hons) Advertising and Public Relations students from LSFMD, who staged their evening graduate showcase on Wednesday 10 May. The students came up with the concept and branding, as well as managing all the organisation, fundraising and promotion.
In mid-May, BA (Hons) Acting students at from LCM performed ‘Wind / Rush Generation(s)’ by Mojisola Adebao, a play unravelling the history of the Windrush political scandal and its knock-on effects.
LCM postgraduate students also created an exhibition of Interactive Sound Installations at Gunnersbury Park Museum towards the end of the month.
Early June saw the Espacio Gallery in Bethnal Green host degree shows from students representing the BA (Hons) Fashion Branding and Marketing, Buying and Management and Promotion and Imaging and the BA (Hons) Photography and BSc (Hons) Visual Effects courses.
Student concerts in June included the London College of Music Camerata, featuring pieces from Mozart, Sullivan, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and contemporary women composers and an evening of jazz featuring LCM Performance students including Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Vocal Ensemble.
Composition students also collaborated with professionals during a two-day composition festival, in mid-June. The Vincente Trio, violinist Timothy Schwarz and pianist Emanuele Mollica
took part in workshops with the students and then performed their pieces.
ARTSFEST came to a close in July, with an event at the OXO Tower, where the work of UWL’s BA (Hons) Interior Design students went on display. The BA (Hons) Fashion & Textiles students’ final year collections are being displayed virtually this year, with a special film showcasing their work.
Head of Subject, Design and Communication, Dorota Watson, said:
We are very proud of everyone who took part in this year’s ARTSFEST and made it such a rich and exciting showcase of UWL’s arts students’ talents. We wish them all the very best for the start of their professional lives and look forward to seeing what they do next.”
