TIG Live, which is organised by TechSkills, who are the accreditors of the ITMB and Apprenticeship programmes, brings together students from universities across the UK for a day of challenges and activities. The idea is to promote interactive, thought-provoking and fun ways to learn.
Three Level 6 UWL students - Namira Shrestha, Arshian Hussain and Ali Chaush - won the Tech Titans Business Proposal Award, receiving a £600 prize for their presentation on the TICTIC app. In advance of the event, student teams were asked to come up with ideas on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be used to support people with disabilities in overcoming barriers they face.
The UWL team’s TICTIC application would empower people with dyslexia, providing them with tailored support to improve their reading and comprehension by using generative AI and large language models (LLMs) to provide predictive text support.
This is the third year in a row that UWL has taken the top prize. In addition, UWL student Sthiti Panda won a prize for Fearless Presentation, and Namira Shrestha was recognised as Best Team Member. Best Creative Chicken Awards - where students were challenged to come up with ideas on how to make chickens using Lego - also went to Namira, Arshian, Mohammed, John and Ali.
The judges were impressed by the engagement and high level of participation demonstrated by UWL students, says Dr Hafiz Sherazi, who is Programme Leader for the BSc in ITMB. He added:
I am proud to lead such a wonderful team who performed so exceptionally. I would like to congratulate them all on their achievements, and I hope they demonstrate the same zeal at future events.”
The BSc (Hons) Information Technology Management for Business (ITMB) at UWL combines developing IT knowledge and technical ability with business and professional skills. Addressing a skills gap identified by employers, it aims to make graduates highly employable.
