UWL will allocate the funding to support two critical sectors: logistics and construction. In addition, the funding will be used to develop and enhance outreach activity for prospective candidates.
The funding is the result of the first round of a competitive bidding process, as part of the OfS’s £40 million degree apprenticeships fund, which will provide support for 205 Level 6 degree apprenticeship programmes at 51 higher education providers.
Janet Rowson, Director of Apprenticeships at UWL, said,
UWL is wholeheartedly committed to increasing opportunities for people who may not otherwise have considered to going to university. UWL offers a variety of high-quality degree apprenticeships to attract and retain talent which supports businesses in London and the south east. We are delighted to have received this funding to improve participation in degree apprenticeships in logistics and construction.”
John Blake, Director for Fair Access and Participation at the OfS, said:
Degree apprenticeships can provide a beneficial alternative route for students in higher education, which bridges the spaces between traditional study and the workplace. Our initial £12 million investment will support universities and colleges to accelerate their efforts to grow and develop these courses.”
Robert Halfon, Minister for Skills, Apprenticeships and Higher Education, said:
Degree apprenticeships are a crucial rung on the ladder of opportunity and an important instrument of social justice. By offering people from all backgrounds the chance to gain valuable workplace experience while studying for a degree, they open doors that might otherwise have been closed.”
