Brief Interventions in Mental Health Care
Overview
This credit-bearing course, which is offered at both our Reading and West London Campuses, will equip mental health practitioners with the knowledge and skills to:
- Assess clients in acute mental distress and collaboratively plan care
- Deliver and evaluate a range of evidence-based brief interventions to clients with a range of acute mental health problems.
Course requirements - Evidence of study at Level 5 (Diploma Level).
Cost and funding - This fee covers the full course cost:
- Sept 23 - Aug 24 fees: £900
- Sept 24- Aug 25 fees: TBC
Credits: 20
Assessment method: Case study presentation 50% and essay 50%

The course will focus on:
- Engaging and working collaboratively with clients in acute mental distress
- Determining individual needs and risks and developing and providing individualised acute care
- Strategies to determine the needs and strengths of clients with acute mental health problems
- Enhancing coping strategies, problem-solving and managing acute distress and risk
- Group work skills including facilitating anxiety management, hearing voices and other symptom management groups
- Interprofessional working in relation to the delivery of brief interventions
- Evidence base and rationale for brief interventions and current policy regarding the care of individuals with an acute mental health problem
- Systematic and evidence-based evaluation and review of brief interventions
- Function and role of statutory and voluntary sector organisations, carers, families and informal support networks in the management of acute distress and recovery from acute mental health problems
- Strategies for promoting core NHS values when caring for a client with an acute mental health problem.
Study days are from 9am to 4pm.

This can be taken as a standalone module or the credits can be used towards one of the exciting courses below:
- BSc (Hons) Psychosocial Interventions for Psychosis
- BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice (Mental Health)
- PgCert/PgDip/MSc Clinical Practice (Complex Mental Health Needs) - the first module in pathway can be studied at L6 - maximum of 20 credits.
