Promoting health: University of West London students meet staff and residents at local care centre
Intro
A group of Master of Public Health (MPH) students at UWL’s College of Nursing Midwifery and Healthcare (CNMH) visited the Victoria Care Centre in Park Royal recently. The centre provides specialist, around-the-clock care for elderly people, those with dementia and young adults with long-term neurological conditions.
Article body
The trip gave students the opportunity to interact with residents, caregivers and healthcare professionals at the centre, which has a holistic approach, emphasising not only medical issues, but also mental and emotional needs and social wellbeing. They saw innovative programmes to enhance residents’ quality of life in action, such as recreational activities and nutritional support.
The visit provided valuable insights into the complexities of healthcare delivery, particularly for vulnerable members of society,”
said MPH student Sumayya Fatima.
It served as a poignant reminder of how important my role is in advocating for healthier and more inclusive communities, and reinforced my commitment to pursuing solutions that promote health equity and improve the quality of life for individuals across the lifespan.”
MPH student Abimbola Akindele said:
The outing was very enlightening. The staff and managers were so patient and accommodating in explaining how the centre is run and the importance of care homes to society.”
Hafiz Khan, Professor of Public Health and Statistics at CNMH, who accompanied the students to the centre, said:
This visit gave our students useful, practical experience of customer service, day-to-day operations, leadership and management. It was an incredible opportunity for them to learn directly from healthcare providers. We are so grateful to everyone at the centre for their warm hospitality.”
Basu Lamichhane, General Manager at the centre, commented:
It was our great pleasure to welcome Professor Khan and the students. We are looking forward to working together in the future to enhance our mutual learnings and collaborative partnership.”
UWL’s Master of Public Health aims to help students understand the impact that financial, social, and environmental circumstances have on people’s health. Read more on our course page.
