How we'll work with you
How we'll work with you
From the outset, UWL will work closely with the contract manager at your organisation, to embed all contractual requirements:
- The University's Head Degree Apprenticeships (or Health Contract Manager) will be the account manager at the start of the contract. This person will lead on the contract and be responsible for the service-level agreement
- In case of periods of absence or unavailability, a Deputy Contract Manager will also be appointed.
During the apprenticeship, there will be regular liaison between the ASLT, the apprentice(s) and their mentor.
The Course Leader and Apprenticeship Support link Tutor (ASLT) will agree a schedule of face-to-face meetings which will, in most cases, take place within the workplace. These meetings, initially taking place every six to eight weeks, will bring together the key stakeholders to monitor and review progress.
During these occasions, feedback on performance will be shared, and discussions will take place about the current course topics and how these can be applied to the apprentice's role. The apprentice will be expected to record any targets and actions on their Individual Learning Plan (ILP), which we host on CampusPress, our virtual portfolio website. Workplace mentors will also be able to record their feedback here.
In addition, apprentices have weekly meetings with their personal tutor, which can either be face-to-face or online.
Teaching, learning and assessment
Technology-enhanced learning
Various e-learning and blended learning technologies have been incorporated into our degree apprenticeship provision. Like all students, apprentices have 24/7 access to Blackboard, our learning management system, via the University of West London Student Portal.
Enhancement and enrichment
Guest lectures are delivered at UWL from current industry practitioners, ensuring students receive the latest information and insights from leading figures in their field. There are also educational study trips to relevant business and other institutions.
Relating theory and practice
Students are encouraged to relate theoretical knowledge to real world tasks and challenges, helping them to contribute directly to their place of work.
The learning environment
The University of West London offers a fantastic venue for socialising and studying alike, with highlights including the new Paul Hamlyn library at our Ealing site, our simulation centres in Brentford and Reading, and a wide range of socialising and study spaces operated by UWL and the Students’ Union.

Our staff
Our staff
The lecturers on our apprenticeships have been selected not only for their academic credentials but also their relevant industry backgrounds and ongoing employer engagement in their fields.
Teaching teams
Our enthusiastic, dedicated teaching staff are qualified to at least Master’s Degree level and possess a teaching qualification (either a Certificate of Education or a PGCE), and many either hold or are working towards a PhD.
Continuing Professional Development
Every year, all teaching staff at UWL are required to undertake five continuous Continuing Professional Development (CPD) days. For academic tutors on apprenticeship courses, these days are focused on updating industry skills and knowledge as well as specific research to inform teaching, learning and assessment.
Support for your apprentice
Support for your apprentice
Ensuring a healthy and sustainable work-life balance is a key challenge for both employers and training providers. Our support services are based in one location at the University, a ‘one stop shop’ where apprentices can access help and guidance from:
- Student Union Services
- Disability and Mental Health
- Student Counselling and Wellbeing
- Student Advice
- Student Engagement
Academic and pastoral support for apprentices is provided by:
A personal tutor
All students at UWL including apprentices have a personal tutor, who offers pastoral support and guidance on matters related to academic progression and choices.
An Apprenticeship Support Link Tutor (ASLT)
An ASLT will manage the relationship between you as an employer and the individual apprentice(s) working for you. The ASLT will liaise regularly with the apprentice and their workplace-based mentor, sharing feedback on performance and discussing current course topics in relation to the work the apprentice is doing.
