Our cytology screening course is delivered over two study days.

For the academic year 2023/24 the course dates are:

  • 12th November 2024

Please note that the 16th and 18th September 2024 course dates have been postponed.

Course Schedule

Day 1:

Face to Face theory study session.

Day 2: 

Face-to-face simulation study day and Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)

Topics

The cytology screening course will cover the following 8 topic areas:

  • Topic 1: The NHS CSP
  • Topic 2: Background to cervical screening
  • Topic 3: Organisation of the NHS CSP
  • Topic 4: Equality of access to cervical screening
  • Topic 5: Cervical screening sample requests
  • Topic 6: Understanding the test results
  • Topic 7: Anatomy and physiology of the pelvic organs
  • Topic 8: Practical aspects of taking cervical samples

Eligibility

The following UK-registered healthcare professionals are eligible to train to undertake the role of cervical sample taker:

  • Registered nurses
  • Registered nursing associates: When a nursing associate has registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), a registered professional listed under the legislation (registered nurse or GP) will need to supervise their practice.
  • Registered midwives
  • Physician associates who are registered on the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR)
  • Registered healthcare professionals working in integrated sexual health (ISH) clinics
  • General Medical Council (GMC) registered medical doctors.

Training record

In addition to the theory study day, all novice sample takers must have a personal training record and present this as either a portfolio of evidence or a workbook.
