Overview
The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree apprenticeship, developed in collaboration with UK Civil Engineering employers, offers an exceptional opportunity for employers seeking to develop highly skilled professionals.
Spanning four years, the apprenticeship allows you to learn and work simultaneously in a dynamic civil engineering role. Your employer covers the tuition fees through the apprenticeship levy while providing you with a competitive salary.
Throughout the program, as an apprentice you will have direct involvement in civil engineering projects, gaining hands-on experience and practical skills that are directly applicable to the industry.
Professional accreditation
This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising of the:
- Institution of Civil Engineers
- Institution of Structural Engineers
- Institute of Highway Engineers
- The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation
- the Permanent Way Institution
This degree partially meets the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). To qualify for CEng registration, you must possess a master's or doctorate accreditation as part of your further learning, meeting the accredited qualifications required for CEng.

The BEng Civil Engineering degree apprenticeship has been developed in partnership with a select group of esteemed employers. Among them are Simpson Associates Consulting Engineers, a highly successful civil and structural engineering consultancy established in 1969 with offices in London, Henley on Thames, Gloucester and Exeter. We are also proud to collaborate with MNP, a recognised innovative SME with a track record of over £400 million in engineering projects both nationally and internationally.
While studying on this programme, significant parts of your learning will take place at work and will contribute to your overall degree. As a Degree Apprentice, you will be a fully salaried employee, with all the benefits this brings. You’ll be working as part of a team with real responsibility giving you hands-on, vocational training every day. At work, you will be supported in your role by both your line manager and mentor.
Requirements
Requirements for apprentices
To be eligible for the apprenticeship, you should have 112-120 UCAS tariff points from Level 3 qualifications, including A-Level Mathematics or an equivalent qualification. Additionally, you should have GCSE qualifications (Level 2) in English with grades A*-C or 9-4.
UWL Requirements: If you are accepted onto the course, we will ask your employer to register you with the ICE Agreed Training Scheme, providing you with a structured platform to demonstrate your learning in the workplace.
Qualifications that meet the requirements include:
- A-Levels with grades B, B, and C or above
- BTEC Extended Diploma with Distinction, Merit, Merit
- Access to HE Diploma
For individuals who are FdEng or HND Civil Engineering or Civil and Environmental Engineering graduates working in the civil engineering or construction industries and have acquired sufficient professional experience, it is recommended to apply for the day release level 6 BEng Civil and Environmental Engineering. This allows for direct entry into level 6.
English language requirement: If you do not have evidence of an English qualification that meets the Education and Skills Funding Agency requirements, you must achieve this before starting the apprenticeship.

Overseas Qualifications: If you have an overseas qualification, we will assess its UK equivalency during your application process and inform you of any additional requirements you may need to fulfil.
Eligibility
All apprenticeships starting from 1 August 2021 are subject to the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) Apprenticeship Funding Rules. Throughout the duration of the apprenticeship, you must meet the eligibility requirements in place at that time, including:
- Having the right to work and study in England
- Spending at least 50% of your working time in England
- Being a UK citizen and having been ordinarily resident in the UK for the last three years, or meeting specific immigration statuses
UK and Irish Nationals: have been ordinarily resident in the UK or EEA for the three years before the first day of the start of the apprenticeship.
EEA nationals: have either pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme; and have been ordinarily resident in the EEA, Gibraltar, or the UK for at least the previous three years before the first day of the start of the apprenticeship.
*Non-EEA nationals: you are eligible if you have permission from the UK government to live in the UK, (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the first day of the start of the apprenticeship.
* You must meet the UK government’s eligibility criteria for apprenticeship funding:
Where an applicant for an apprenticeship does not hold a UK passport as a British citizen, these requirements state that you must have an immigration permission in the UK that allows you to study and will cover the length of the whole apprenticeship in full without you needing to extend your visa or immigration permission during the apprenticeship.

Teaching & learning
The BEng Civil Engineering degree apprenticeship, designed to seamlessly blend academic learning with real-world application, is an ideal investment for employers seeking to cultivate expertly trained civil engineers within their organisation.
The structure of the apprenticeship uniquely integrates a comprehensive academic curriculum with work-based projects, fostering an immersive learning experience. The course content is largely influenced by practical challenges encountered in the workplace, ensuring that the acquired knowledge and skills are directly applicable to the industry.
Our 'day release' system congregates all apprentices one day per week, fostering a dynamic and collaborative learning environment. These sessions, inclusive of lectures, seminars, workshops, and time with an academic mentor, offer an optimal blend of theoretical knowledge and practical training.
Additionally, the University’s sophisticated electronic learning environment supports the blended elements of the course, including lectures and online collaborative work. This system effectively supplements and extends the learning initiated during day-release sessions, promoting continuous intellectual growth.
Study mode
Apprentices are required to dedicate one day per week to their academic studies.
- Year 1: Mondays, 9 am to 6 pm
- Year 2: Thursdays, 9 am to 6 pm
- Year 3: Thursdays, 9 am to 6 pm
- Year 4: Mondays, 9 am to 1 pm.

Costs & fees
Costs for apprentices
Although there are no tuition fees payable by you as an apprentice, additional costs may be incurred which are outside of the apprenticeship levy funding. Please discuss additional costs directly with your employer.
Costs for employers

Ali Bahadori-Jahromi is a Professor of Civil Engineering, course leader for undergraduate and postgraduate Civil and Environmental Engineering including the Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship, and head of the Building Performance and Climate Change research group. His research group produced several research outputs, a number of PhD graduates for the civil and built environment and attracted collaboration and research funding from leading companies and research centres including: The Hilton, The Concrete Centre, XP Solutions and The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
Professor Jahromi is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) recognised by the Engineering Council. He is also a member of the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) which is the UK accreditation body for Civil Engineering courses and Chartered Examiner for the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Study & career progression
The BEng Civil Engineering degree apprenticeship is a full BEng degree, studied over four years.
Our programme has been designed in collaboration with employers to satisfy the Apprenticeship Standard for a Civil Engineer. This is the employer-defined, government-approved standard of competence for an apprentice in this occupation.
The apprenticeship has also been accredited by multiple professional bodies.
While elements of the degree will be studied during time at work, the majority of your tuition delivered in form of day release by University of West London academic staff.
