Why study this course?
This is a one-year foundation course after which you will study for a three-year degree. You will be able to choose any of the BA courses that we run in the London School of Film, Media and Design.
After a year spent building your skills in good academic practices and research while experiencing all the aspects of student life, you will be ready to progress seamlessly to your chosen degree.
Our foundation year course is particularly suited to you if:
- you do not have the relevant qualifications in a media or design subject
- you are returning to study
- if English is not your first language and could benefit from a year of practising your verbal and writing skills
- if you are still deciding on which field of media and design you would like to specialise in.
Please note that a £2000 Path to Success bursary is available to all UK foundation year students, which is non-repayable.

Why study a Foundation Year?
A Foundation Year prepares you for study at undergraduate level, it s the first step on your university journey. The skills and knowledge you acquire will stand you in good stead for your degree studies as well as your entry into the world of work. Over the course of an academic year, you will explore a range of subjects that will underpin your future studies, as well as enjoy full access to university facilities.
What will I study during the Foundation Year?
You will be supported to help you make the most of the foundation year through:
- independent study (Personalised Learning module)
- an introduction to the various areas of the media and design industry (Creative Sectors module)
- an understanding of how media and design fit with wider society (Contextual Studies module)
- introduction to the software used within the industry (Creative Research module)
- learning good academic practice and discipline (Academic Performance module)
- creation of a media artefact which reflects your chosen path of study (Major Project module).

Through these modules, you come to have a better understanding of the areas within media and design. You will become familiar with techniques that help you to:
- manage your time and study effectively
- learn academic, research and presentation skills.

This module will enable you to read critically, present an argument, and distinguish between the quality and suitability of materials. It will prepare you to use and evaluate a range of evidence sources throughout your degree.

Contextual Studies in Media and Design
Explore how media and design have developed over the years through changes in technology and society.

Creative Research in Media and Design
Undertake the individual research for your major project work whilst learning industry-standard software.

Creative Sectors in Media and Design
Understand the principles and inter-connectedness of the creative sectors and acquire the essential skills for success.

Major Project (Foundation Year)
You will work in groups to produce content showcased in the UWL's interactive magazine FOUND.

Introduction to Fashion Branding and Marketing
In this module, students will learn about the role of marketing for fashion brands and the key theoretical concepts that underpin the activities of the fashion marketer. They will explore the fashion marketing environment, fashion customer behaviour in the digital age, market research and the strategic marketing planning process. This will include the marketing mix and a tactical planning framework to aid marketing effectiveness.

Fashion Forecasting and Contemporary Culture
Students will explore fashion history, design and contemporary culture (including cultural theory, music, and key art movements) from a social, political and economic perspective and interpret key factors that impact fashion forecasting and contemporary culture. Students will present their research in innovative written, digital, visual and verbal formats.

Consumer Behaviour and Trends
Customer loyalty, the customer/user experience and customer insight are the core of achieving optimum satisfaction and retention. This module gives students an understanding of the contemporary fashion customer’s complex needs and wants, their behaviour as consumers and how this sets their expectations. They will learn how to gain the insight required to understand those needs and map the journey to ultimately improve their experience.

Fashion Buying: Concept to Consumer
This module introduces students to the critical path management of own brand or independent merchandise. Students will explore steps taken to measure the quality process of a fashion product with a key understanding of communication with the supply chain. They will learn about the ethical and code of responsibility for fashion product management. With strong analysis of target consumers’ attitude for fashion, students will understand how informed decisions are made for future ranges about colour, shape, style, ratios tops to bottoms.

Fashion Digital Creativity
This module builds on the content covered by Digital Skills for Fashion from the first year of studies. It explores the area of Digital Creativity in depth. By the end of this module, students will have gained advanced skills in using an appropriate range of digital software. They will be introduced to typical approaches and techniques for solving various design and communication problems using software and applications. They will also be able to apply these digital skills into practice for branding and marketing within the fashion industry.

Entrepreneurship and Career Development
This module will introduce students to the personal and professional development of their career choices in the fashion industry. By understanding the different requirements and task of job descriptions, students will look to decipher the terminology and develop confidence in applying for appropriate positions for the preparation for internships in semester two.

External Pitch and Presentation
In conjunction with Luxury Concept module: students will plan and put forward their realised concept via professional pitch. Students will present their ideas and proposal to a live audience of industry professional and internal Staff. This module will allow every individual to focus on the development of communication techniques that will benefit them throughout their career.

Research Planning
This module aims to help students develop the ability to perform strategic creative business research by learning to be critical about other researchers’ as well as one’s own work. From there, one will be able to identify a research “gap” and determine the next steps to be taken, which then leads towards a more specific research plan. More than ever, it is essential to then be able to effectively communicate these research outcomes to the research community and the larger community to ensure the appropriate impact.

Entrepreneurship Portfolio
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to develop a personal career plan and design innovative solutions for a professional portfolio presentation and communication. They will be able to engage effectively with the fashion industry and to develop concise and coherent promotional approaches. Students will also be able to critically and reflectively evaluate their own practice and provide evidence, validity and significance to support conclusions. The module culminates in digital portfolio where students will present their best practice from 3 years of undergraduate study.

Major Negotiated Project or Dissertation
MNP is the culmination of the undergraduate experience at UWL. The module provides an exciting opportunity to put classroom learning into practice and allows students to make a lasting contribution to their field of study. Students will work with an assigned supervisor on an individual industry project or dissertation on a topic of their choice.
Entry requirements
These can include:
- A-Levels at grades B and C (if you have two A-Levels) or grades D, D and D (if you have three), or above
- BTEC Extended Diploma with Merit, Merit, Pass
- Access to HE Diploma
- T-Levels
You also need GCSE English and Maths (grade 9 – 4 / A* - C) or Level 2 equivalents.

You need to meet our English language requirement - a minimum of IELTS 5.5 for each of the four individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening). Visit our English language requirements page for information on other English language tests we accept.
You also need academic qualifications at the same level as UK applicants. In some countries where teaching is in English, we may accept local qualifications. Check for local equivalents.
We offer pre-sessional English language courses if you do not meet these requirements.

Foundation year bursary
If you are a UK student joining a foundation year course with UWL, you will receive a £2000 Path to Success bursary to support your studies. This is not a loan and does not need to be repaid. You will receive £500 per year subject to your attendance, engagement and progression through your studies.

My teaching experience started with A-Level and BTEC in Media and Design since then I have taught at various London institutions at all levels of Higher Education in the field of media, documentary, television and contextual studies. I joined UWL as a full-time staff member in 2016 to establish the successful Foundation course.

Study & career progression
Study Progression: after completing your Foundation Year, you will progress to undergraduate level and can choose to study any of the London School of Film, Media and Design's BA (Hons) courses.
Career Progression: This course will prepare you to work in-house, at an agency, or as a freelancer in the fashion industry. Once you complete your studies, you could go on to work in:
- fashion marketing and social media marketing
- retail fashion
- PR or press
- digital marketing
- fashion advertising
- fashion market research
You may decide to specialise in a related area or explore a new subject. Please see our postgraduate courses for a range of options.
