Award-winning UWL lecturer writes and directs play with support from UWL graduates
Next week theatre-goers will be able to experience a performance of ‘Under the Radar’ thanks to the collective efforts of staff and students from UWL.
UWL senior lecturer Dr Jonathon Crewe is an award-winning writer and director for film, theatre, and radio, and next week he is bringing his latest play ‘Under the Radar’ back by popular demand. The play will be exclusively performed at the Old Red Lion Theatre from 15th March to 2nd April 2022.
This dark comedy was written and directed by Dr Jonathon Crewe and dissects unconscious bias through a sharp, witty, and macabre narrative lens. It examines the connections between our cultures and traditions, and the foundations of prejudice, especially those relevant in the #MeToo era. Each Wednesday, the show will be followed by a discussion panel with thought-leaders on different themes.
The crew and creatives also feature a number of our UWL graduates participating in stage design, social media, PR, and sound design.
Speaking about his upcoming production, Dr Jonathon Crewe said:
I find that one of the best parts of putting on a play is talking to the audience afterwards and seeing how they respond. I hope ‘Under the Radar’ will launch a platform for some interesting discussions by the panelists - I’m really looking forward to hearing different perspectives. To other students who have the ambition to put on their own plays, my main advice is to just start writing. There’s a lot of fear that comes with starting the process, but sometimes you have to just go for it. You never know where it may lead you."
