Food security in the spotlight

Food security in the spotlight

From failing supply chains, growing food poverty, and crippling inflation, the future of food in the UK is under threat. This year’s Victor Ceserani lecture, delivered by Andrew Selley at the University of West London, will explore the future of food security and the challenges this poses to the hospitality sector.

The term ‘food security’ refers to the availability of food and the ability to access it, irrespective of socio-economic group, gender, or region. Despite its global definition, the status of food security in the UK has come under increasing scrutiny following national food shortages and rising food inflation in the wake of Brexit, the climate crisis, and the pandemic.

In this year's lecture, keynote speaker, Andrew Selley, the Chief Executive of Bidfood UK, will outline the key factors at play in food security and explore the challenges facing food supply chains. He will also evaluate the government’s National Food Strategy, discuss what a sustainable food future looks like in the UK, and examine the impact of the Great Reset on the future of food security on a global scale.

The lecture will be moderated by a panel of industry experts led by Professor Alexandros Paraskevas, Chair in Hospitality Management at the UWL. After the lecture, the panel will explore the initiatives Andrew proposes and look at the broader contributions that key industry stakeholders can make to ensure the sustainable future of British food.

James Edmunds, Dean of the London Geller School of Hospitality and Tourism, said:

As always, conversations about sustainability are at the forefront of our work and teaching here at UWL, not only within our School, but throughout the wider university community. We are excited to invite such a distinguished keynote speaker to further this discussion around food security in what should be a fascinating, informative evening.”

The annual lecture series is named after Victor Ceserani MBE, former Head of School of Hospitality at the University of West London.

The lecture, followed by a drinks reception, will be held on Tuesday 29 March at 5:45pm at Asia House, 63 New Cavendish Street, London.
