The Worshipful the Mayor of the London Borough of Ealing, Councillor Mohinder Midha also attended the event, sharing her own story of finding support and community in the UK and an inspiring message of encouragement for women to be brave.

Superintendent Manjit Atawal QPM spoke about the epidemic of violence against women and girls and what the police need to do to protect them, prevent crime and stop and pursue perpetrators.

Commander Dr Alison Heydari shared some of her lived experience in policing and addressed specific challenges and opportunities for women including leadership styles and building confidence, while PC Pete Trueman spoke about how to stand in solidarity with female colleagues in policing, recognise gender-based inequalities, address and remove sexism and misogyny in police culture.

Mark Roycroft, Head of the IPS and previously a senior detective in the Metropolitan Police for 30 years, said:

UWL is honoured to host such an important and topical event for International Women’s Day. Thank you to everyone who attended for helping to make this an engaging and dynamic event.”

Superintendent Hannah Wheeler said:

It was inspiring to jointly host our International Women’s Day event with UWL and hear from so many inspiring speakers. I hope it has encouraged some of our students to challenge themselves and in the words of Commander Heydari ‘be opportunity-ready’!"
