UWL Emeritus Professor named on BBC’s 100 Women list
Introduction
Taking in yet another honour, UWL’s inspiring Emeritus Professor of Nursing, Dame Elizabeth Anionwu, has been named in the BBC’s list of in 100 Women which congratulates influential figures from around the world.
Recognised as one of 32 women listed for their impact on knowledge, Dame Elizabeth was noted for her position at UWL as well as her work as patron of the UK Sickle Cell Society which she helped to found as the country’s first specialist of the condition more than 40 years ago.
Dame Elizabeth has also been a key figure in highlighting the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on BAME communities during her career.
Inspired by a caring nurse at her former children’s home, she started working as a school nursing assistant at the age of 16 and beginning a 50-year career as a nurse, tutor and professor.
