I hold a first-class law degree (LLB Hons) and a Master’s degree (LLM) in International Criminal Law and Security, both of which I obtained from the University of Northampton. I have a PhD from the University of Bedfordshire in which I examined the lack of judicial review for those individuals subjected to United Nations sanctions over alleged connections to terrorism.
I have a teaching qualification for Higher Education and I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Prior to my academic career, I was firstly in the Army, serving in several roles within the Royal Military Police. After leaving the Army I worked as a police officer for several years, again carrying out several different roles including being a nationally trained detective.
Interests
I have several academic interests such as crime and criminal justice, sentencing, and prison policy. I am also interested in terrorism, international law, and human rights and how the tension between these competing issues is dealt with by both the State and the wider international community. I am a member of Justice and regularly attend their conferences. I have led the ‘Ban the Box’ campaign at Bloomsbury Institute which has led to the removal of the need of students to disclose previous criminal convictions whilst applying to study. I also presented on this issue at several organisations and conferences.
