Dr Litha Efthymiou

Senior Lecturer in Composition
London College of Music

Dr Litha Efthymiou is a composer and Senior Lecturer in composition at the University of West London. Her current research focuses on gesture-based modes of expression in composition. Past research explored the reimagining and reinterpretation of medieval music to create new compositions - an area she focused on as part of her PhD on the ERC funded project Shaping Text, Shaping Melody, Shaping Experience in and through the Old Hispanic Office at the University of Bristol. Litha will continue her research in this area through her recent engagement on a project on Iberian Saints, funded by the Dutch research council and led by colleagues at Radboud University in the Netherlands.

Litha’s research has been funded by organisations including ERC, St Hugh’s Foundation, Arts Council England, and the Wellcome Trust. She has published journal articles with Contemporary Music Review, Context, Airea, Act, and is currently working on a book chapter on Pinchbeck’s Ravel Trilogy for Routledge.

Litha’s music has been performed at venues such as Kings Place, Handel and Hendrix in London, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, Kettle's Yard, Southampton’s Turner Simms, The Sage Gateshead, Bath Assembly Rooms, and Bristol St George’s. She has received commissions from numerous acclaimed soloists, ensembles, and organisations, including New Music Southwest, the International Guitar Foundation, PRS Women Make Music, Streetwise Opera, Women of the World Equator Festival, harpsichordist Jane Chapman, the Bristol Ensemble, percussion quartet Ensemble Bash, recorder quintet Consortium 5, and many more. Litha is currently working on a new piece for the London Symphony Orchestra. Her music is published by Edition HH.
