Introduction

UWL are excited to see you on campus and we are confident that you will enjoy the year ahead. We are aware that some students may feel nervous, or have problems develop due to unforeseen circumstances. Our mission is to support our students by promoting a respectful and supportive environment. Therefore, we try to provide activities and resources that may help your positive wellbeing.

Main body

Here are five top tips to help support your wellbeing:

1. Speaking up

More and more people are prepared to talk about how they are feeling, but this is harder for some. There are a range of academic and support staff available for you to talk to. It is also good to talk to friends - you will likely find that flatmates, course mates, or friends from activities are a feeling the same way.

2. Accessing help

Students are often very busy, juggling different parts of their life whilst trying to commit to their studies. Seeking help can be a barrier, and therefore, we want to make access easy. The Student Hub makes it easy to book appointments in your own time. Please look at our support services to find any help that you need.

3. Self-Care

Knowing what our bodies and minds require to be well and then acting on that is key, but we don’t always know what these things are, or there are barriers in the way of making healthy choices. Acts such as setting routines and keeping a healthy lifestyle balance can help build our capacity to deal with situations.

4. Respecting each another

Connections with other people shape our lives and have a big impact on our wellbeing. Respect and understanding for each other helps to create a positive environment for work and study. Never feel pressured to do things you do not want to. UWL promotes an environment that enables a trusting and supportive community.

5. Reflect on Positive Mental Health

Conversations on mental health are often framed around negative experiences and we forget to think about the positive experiences. It is important to recognise, promote, and celebrate those activities and emotions that create positive mental health.

Getting Support

Student Services will offer appropriate support and help you to report any distressing or concerning issues as appropriate. For support, talk to one of our advisers in welfare:

We also provide a confidential student counselling, which is free and accessible to all students.
