Showing a futuristic figure being edited in Adobe Premiere Pro

Nikol Manolova

"The Void is a short animation 3D film (00:03:00 minutes in duration) with content for young adults of the age of 16 or above. The official creator is Nikol Manolova, a student from the University of West London. Nikol is on the Games, Design and Animation course. The student is working alone to create a Final Major Project from 16 February 2022 to 20 May 2022.

The story and narrative follow the thoughts of the main character Helena, who is pursuing her freedom of mind and soul, living in a futuristic world created by future humanity. She is an artificial intelligence showing her visions, fighting with her inner self and the real world where the human soul does not exist and only the physical and material matters. Helena is going on a journey to find the place called The Void and wake up.

The final goal is to have a personal insight into people's internal understanding of the new world created by our generation and how people's decisions will have a significant impact on the future, reducing physical touch with non-real ones. Spreading the awareness of how future decisions can destroy human nature by itself and have a big impact on the internal being of the persona."

"AIM is to use the existing Old Session House building to design a mix-use building incorporating the Office environment for an advertising agency, a Hotel and well-being and public access spaces for our two different clients within the Old Session House located at 22 Clerkenwell Green, London EC1R 0NA. The design will reflect the aim to create private, semi-private and open spaces where both users can emerge and interact.

  • Main client: Mother who we are designing as part of their company the smaller spaces for Mother Research, Mother Digital, an Incubation hub for start-ups and collaboration/flexible spaces. Furthermore, the design will emphasise zones for a restaurant, and bar and include a gym, yoga/dance studio, spa, and interactive space with an auditorium space to bring the employees together. These refreshment & replenishment areas will be open to the public and have the facility for 24/7 access.
  • Secondary client: Network of the Hospitality Industry (NEWH) for which we are designing hotel accommodation, members clubs & enabling access to the public zones  (for 60-80 people). The design will incorporate flexible rooms and spaces to accommodate various users along with a new design of living for indoor & outdoor hotel capsules.

CONCEPT: the design outcome comes from my site analysis, using the sun direction as the key to my design and placing key zones and spaces to maximise this. Incorporating key design strategies for the focus on sustainability thoroughly in the design using sustainable materials, solar panels, green roofs, and rainwater collection. As part of the design, the well-being space is open to allow free circulation via the externally added lifts."

BA (Hons) Photography

The BA (Hons) Photography student work showcases a collection of individual approaches to photography, ranging from images reflecting on the impact of coastal erosion, to explorations of family life, attitudes towards body image and depictions of landscape and still life.

On the course we encourage a practical and critical exploration of photography, helping students to develop their own vision through tackling exciting modules which challenge their understanding of the medium. Technical skills form an important part of our approach and are considered an essential component of study in terms of underpinning creative ideas and exploration. The work you see on this page gives a snapshot of the extended final year projects and the associated research that students have undertaken throughout their final year.

Carroll Konopacki

ARTSFEST Photography work created by Carroll Konopacki - a black and white collage of London with its continual changes and mutations.

Carroll Konopacki

This project is a portrayal of London with its continual changes and mutations. I used photomontage to depict the city as a living organism and to illustrate architecture's dynamism and transience. My method of creating, deconstructing, and redesigning each collage echoes the city's impermanence and mutability. A megacity might seem solid, immobile and everlasting, yet various elements emerge while others disappear without our notice every day. Images of cities are affected not just by their physical reality, but also by how and by whom they are perceived.

Rui Fernandes Garcia

ARSFEST Photography work by Rui Fernandes Garcia entitled "Urban Kaleidoscope" showing a series of photographic collages that explore the dynamic and multifaceted nature of urban landscapes.

Rui Fernandes Garcia

'Urban Kaleidoscope' is a series of photographic collages that explore the dynamic and multifaceted nature of urban landscapes. Drawing inspiration from the bustling streets, towering skyscrapers and diverse communities that define modern cities, this project seeks to capture the kaleidoscopic essence of urban life. Each collage is meticulously crafted using different photographs taken from various vantage points within the cityscape. Through the process of layering and juxtaposition, I aim to evoke the vibrant energy, complexity, and contradictions inherent in urban environments. At its core, this project is a celebration of the rich tapestry of human experience that unfolds against the backdrop of the city. From moments of solitude amidst the hustle and bustle to the vibrant interplay of cultures and identities, each collage serves as a testament to the diversity, resilience, and vitality of urban life.

'Capturing the Mystery of Gunners Park: A Night Photography Project' is a series of images based on my nocturnal exploration of the historic Shoeburyness Old Ranges in Gunners Park, located along the picturesque Thames Estuary. Built in 1856, Shoeburyness Old Ranges functioned as a British Army military training and testing area for artillery and weapons. I photographed the site using light painting techniques inspired by the British artist Edgar Martins, who combines long exposures with multiple bursts of flash. I experimented with various light sources, including torches, LED panels, and coloured gels.

Working in the dark has its challenges, but it can be enjoyable and visually rewarding. The stillness of the photographic night scenes is a metaphor for the complex emotions surrounding our perceptions of places and spaces over time. A sense of nostalgia and uncertainty emerges, transforming the space into the unknown. This project invites viewers to reflect on their relationship with the environment, exploring themes of transience, nostalgia, and the unstoppable passage of time.

Emma Cardoso

ARTSFEST Photography work created by Emma Cardoso entitled "Rhythms of India" showing a female dancer in a detailed vibrant costume.

Emma Cardoso

'Rhythms of India' is a series of photographs depicting different types of Indian classical and folk dance. Each image represents a dance from a particular state in India. This project attempts to showcase the diverse Indian culture reflected in its various dance forms, from the beautiful and colourful detailed costumes, and the unique jewellery to the expressive makeup. Through my lens, I have tried to capture the passion, devotion, and beautiful creativity that Indian dancers bring to their craft. In these photographs, I hope the viewer will experience the emotions unfolding before them through the expressions and gestures of the dancers frozen in time by the camera.

Fading Away” is a project that explores the issue of coastal erosion in the UK, a problem worsened by global warming and the rise of sea levels, which deeply affect communities that live in seaside towns. The work is focused on coastal resorts in the county of Kent, in the South-East of England, that are at risk of disappearance by 2100. The choice of locations in these photographs is based on data drawn from the European Commission and Kent Council reports that identify areas at risk of flooding or erosion. To convey the notion of environmental loss and disintegration, digital C-prints were submerged in seawater taken from the location represented in the photograph and left to dissolve for days. The work can be viewed as a study of impermanence that characterises both photography and the landscape.

Emily de Silva

Emily de Silva's work shows the relationship between urban areas and the night sky, while stars are visible above buildings next to the coast.

Emily de Silva

My work explores the relationship between urban areas and the night sky. The stars are best seen in rural areas with no light pollution, which allows even the faintest of celestial bodies such as galaxies and planets to be seen with the naked eye. However, the stars right outside our own front doors cannot be seen due to the lights from the towns and cities we live in. The need for safety around our homes means we lose sight of our faraway neighbours. The dark does not have to be something we fear, but something we can appreciate if we turn off the lights.
