Lusia challenged stereotypes in the world of computing
Introduction
Becoming fascinated by machines and how they work at the age of just six, UWL student, Lusia Theurer is challenging stereotypes and proving her doubters wrong to carve out a career in the world of computing.
Now studying for an MSc in Artificial Intelligence, she’s continuing to ignore the voices who told her it is not the industry for women.

I’ve always been interested in technology, and as I got older this moved to more sophisticated areas of programming and data.
I’ve come across people criticising my decision to study technology, and who made fun of me for being ‘just’ a woman who can’t survive in a male dominated industry. But I’ve always had faith in my abilities and I think the most important thing is to keep doing what you enjoy and believe in yourself.
People might find the idea of working in front of a screen all day boring, but to me the ability to create a smart program, a robot or even a self-driving car just by writing lines of code is absolutely magical.
I’ve learnt so much at UWL from basic programming and software engineering to data analytics and machine learning. I was inspired by each module and the lecturers, and my enthusiasm has only grown."
