5 tips to get your dissertation off to a flying start

Completing your dissertation and getting the best grade possible doesn’t need to be headache. The UWL Study Support Team has helped countless students to successfully write and submit their dissertations – here are their top tips to get your dissertation off to a flying start.

1. Start small, start early

Before you begin, take some time to identify a topic area that you wish to explore. You may wish to focus on something that you have studied in a previous module, or you can align your focus with something that you enjoy. Once you’ve decided on a topic area, stick to it. Juggling too many ideas can waste time.

2. Understand your topic area

It’s important to have a good foundation of knowledge before you begin your dissertation. Research and read about what is going on in and around your topic area. Doing this will help you find a unique perspective to pursue in your research.

3. Be realistic

You won’t always have enough time or resources to explore everything within your topic area. Make sure you are setting yourself realistic goals. It can be tempting to try to produce an overly complex piece of work, but you’ll find it far more effective to create a clear, solid and realistic piece of work.

Do also remember that you will probably have work to submit for other modules at the same time, so a clear and relatively simply structured dissertation can help you deliver well on all your final year assignments and prevent you from becoming overwhelmed.

4. Manage your time effectively

By breaking your dissertation into a number of smaller tasks, you will find it easier to get things done. Schedule your tasks and be mindful of how long it will take you to complete them. You can then review your progress and adjust your timings if needed. When you’re scheduling your tasks, make sure you consider your other modules and the commitments that you have outside work.

5. Use the support available

UWL is full of learning communities you can join, resources you can use and support you can tap into – make sure you make the most of them. Your supervisor can advise you on how to approach different stages of your dissertation. Connect with peers who are in the same position as you – they will be able to empathise with you and offer their support. You can also book an appointment with the Study Support Team to get one-to-one expert guidance.

If you follow these five simple steps, you can get your dissertation off to a great start and ensure you are best placed to get a great mark. And remember, if you need help – just ask!
