UWL’s London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism (LGCHT) recently hosted a Hospitality Symposium for close to 70 attendees from the hotel industry, academia, alumni and students. The event was part of a UWL knowledge-exchange funded project aimed at improving the employability of hospitality graduates.

The aim of the event was to understand the perspective of industry on graduate employability, the views of academics on effective ways to collaborate with the industry, hear from alumni about how they see the challenges, and take questions from current students.

The main aim of this project is to ensure that our students are learning the quality skills required by the hotel industry,”

said Lecturer in Hospitality Management Jayanti Jayanti, who organised and hosted the event.

Attendees sat together at round tables and discussed the top three challenges to the employability of graduates, the top three ways academia/industry can help address the challenges, and then presented their findings to all attendees.

The discussion was followed by afternoon tea and networking.

I enjoyed spending time with the students and industry peers. I spoke to five or six students that were very keen on summer jobs and I’m looking forward to hearing from them,”

said Robin Vermeire, Director of Human Resources at Mandarin Oriental.

It was a great afternoon meeting everyone and discussing and sharing the challenges we all face and how we can make it better for everyone. I’m looking forward to seeing the difference we can all make,”

said Kirsteen Raitt, Group Recruitment Manager for Firmdale Hotels.

The experience of engaging with exceptional students, exchanging insights and delving into discussions about employability and industry-level skill development within the hotel industry was enriching,” said Swayam Thapa, a UWL alumnus who is now a Conference and Events Operation Service Manager at Hilton London Metropole. “It was delightful to reconnect with my lecturers too.”
