How to make social media work for you

Social media – love it or hate it, the fact is it’s almost impossible to avoid these days.

We all know there are pitfalls that come with our social media accounts, but there are a lot of great benefits to staying connected online as well. They give you a chance to impress!

Don’t forget that if you make your profiles public, potential employers will be able to access your accounts, so it’s worth making sure they look fantastic.

Here are our top tips to make the most out of your social media accounts.

Make the most of LinkedIn Learning

Did you know as a UWL student you automatically get access to LinkedIn Learning? There are a couple of courses on there that may help you improve your profile and attract potential employers. Try searching for the ‘Rock your LinkedIn profile’ course to get started.

Check your settings

Don’t confuse personal and professional profiles - keep in mind what platforms and accounts are for social interactions and which are for professional interactions. However, remember it is still easy to find both and you need to think about that personal brand that you want all to see.

Some social media sites, such as Instagram and Twitter, allow you to set privacy settings on specific content so make sure you’re in control of which content people have access to.

Think before you…type

It is easy to get carried away with emotions on social media and post comments you would never say in person. Before writing, think about what you are saying and how others may interpret what you put out there. There are numerous examples from the last year of people losing jobs for their comments. It is also against social media platform policy to post comments that are considered harassment or offensive.
