A Deputy Senior Judge has called for greater diversity in the field of law, in an address to alumni from the University of West London’s (UWL) School of Law.

District Judge Tanweer Ikram CBE outlined the challenges he faced growing up and how these formative experiences played a significant role in his current career success. Drawing on his own experiences, he reminded graduates of the importance of perseverance and hard work, in the face of obstacles and setbacks.

Judge Ikram also emphasised the crucial role diversity plays in the field of law. He pointed out that encouraging a range of perspectives, be that in higher education institutions or workplaces, is essential to the sustainable future of the modern legal profession. He ended his speech by recognising the increased importance of inclusivity in the wake of current world crises.

Afterwards, Philip Ells, Head of the School of Law at UWL, spoke about the importance of connecting students with legal professionals. He said:

This is a great example of how we encourage professionals working in law to give back to the next generation of legal minds. We don’t just provide a great education, we connect our students to the profession in a way that enables them to develop their career.”
