UWL building strong healthcare careers with NHS apprenticeships

To kickstart National Apprenticeship Week 2022, UWL is celebrating its partnership with the West London NHS Trust by looking back on years of ongoing success across healthcare training.

The Trust works with UWL to deliver apprenticeships to its employees, a framework that not only upskills its workforce locally but secures the delivery of the skills needed to improve care across all sectors of the NHS.

Staff are offered continued training and professional qualifications through both the Chartered Manager degree apprenticeship and Nurse Associate apprenticeship, with the University also now enrolling healthcare employees on its postgraduate Senior Leader course.

These specialist apprenticeships offer the chance for NHS staff to train and upskill whilst working in their roles across the Trust, ensuring a high standard of patient care continues to be delivered, and all funded by their employer.

Carol Plows, Vocational Development and Apprenticeship Manager at the Trust, said that with so much encouraging feedback from apprentices, they are seeing growing interest in training for senior leaders.

She said:

Just recently we have had three people complete the Senior Leader apprenticeship, which is very exciting and is being celebrated within the organisation. Already we are seeing more interest in this programme and the benefits it can bring.

Having a good relationship with the University is key to the success of our apprentices. When people complete their training we gain employees that have grown in confidence, and their skills enable us to develop our talent pipeline and build future careers within the NHS."

Janet Rowson, Head of Degree Apprenticeships at UWL, said:

West London NHS Trust was one of the first large employers to work with us on the delivery of degree apprenticeships, and they have continued to be a very valued partner.

The Trust really champions the degree apprenticeship scheme for both clinical and non-clinical staff, supporting their employees to progress in their professional development."

UWL Chartered Manager degree apprenticeship help professionals develop managerial abilities and build transferable skills to improve all areas of service delivery. The Nurse Associate apprenticeship offers new skills to directly improve client care and support other nurses.
