Thousands of students are celebrating as they receive their degrees from the University of West London this week after finally being able to collect their awards in front of family and friends following Covid restrictions.

Scenes of celebration began on Monday for the first of five days of ceremonies at Twickenham Stadium – with students officially completing courses from the University’s creative, healthcare, engineering and computing, and biomedical science degree courses.

With more than 20 ceremonies lined up, the week will allow students who have finished their courses at any time over the past two years to get together with family and friends to mark the occasion at the iconic venue.

Celebrations started on Monday when hundreds of students from both UWL’s London College of Music and London School of Film, Media and Design collected their degrees in ceremonies which marked the next stage in their journeys to build rewarding and fulfilling careers in the creative industries.

This week, the University will also present 10 inspiring figures with honorary degrees in recognition of their achievements – including renowned author of ‘Wild Swans’, Dr Jung Chang; SBTV founder and music promoter, Jama Edwards; and respected legal expert, Courtenay Griffiths.

Professor Anthony Woodman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UWL, said:

I want to extend huge congratulations to all our graduands from the last two years. Their accomplishment after years of hard work is significant, and we are very proud to see so many people now ready to take their next steps.

The past 18 months have been incredibly challenging for us all, but have also shown how incredibly resilient our students here at UWL are and have been. The flexibility of them all as they supported those in need in our community shows just a fraction of the good deeds done by the university of which I am humbled and heartened by.

We strive every day to make a difference and ensure everyone has the right to education. To have so many people with us this week ready to join the global network of UWL graduates and ready to make a positive difference to the world around them is truly inspiring. Well done, and good luck to them all."
