UWL ‘on track’ to become UK’s most sustainable University

Over the summer, work has been taking place across UWL to decarbonise the campus and make the University even greener.

Since 2005 UWL has reduced carbon emissions by 60 percent and the current decarbonisation project will lead to a saving of over 500 tonnes of carbon emissions every year – the equivalent annual emission of 108 cars.

With the end of the decarbonisation works in sight, we caught up with Nasrin Khanom, Environmental and Sustainability Manager to find out the plans in place for UWL to be carbon-neutral by 2030.

As a University we are taking a lead in tackling the world’s climate crisis and we are on-track to meet our net carbon goal. We have done lots of great work, there is still a long way to go. The decarbonisation project means that we are creating our own renewable electricity and becoming more energy efficient, but this will be all for nothing if we don’t change our own actions.

With more than 14,000 people in the University community, we can make a big difference if we all make some simple changes and Nasrin has some big plans for the future to get people involved in reaching our net carbon goal.

We can all take simple actions to recycle more, use less energy and conserve water and we are working on some exciting plans to make sustainability easy and fun in the new academic year. We already have great group of students and staff who are shaping our plans – so if  you’re interested – come and join us.

Students can get involved by joining UWLSU’s Sustainability Network or just email the Sustainability Team.
