Volunteering stories - Naomi Kiaku

BA (Hons) Event Management with Hospitality student discusses her volunteering experiences.

Main body

Naomi started university in September 2014 and first got involved with the V Team at another volunteer’s project in November. Since then she has flourished, volunteering both as an Events volunteer and a Communications Assistant volunteer during Student Volunteering Week, as well as being a regular One Day Challenge volunteer.

21-year-old Naomi says:

I was inspired to start volunteering as I wanted to enhance my student experience and I was attracted to the positivity of the V Team. Volunteering just puts a smile on my face and I am hoping to apply to be a Project Leader next year."

Naomi also feels that her volunteering experiences will help her in furthering her future career path in events. She says:

The skills I am gaining will help me in interviews for events-related jobs, as well as helping my own practical events management skills, in terms of communications and working as part of a team."

She also credits volunteering with helping with the social aspect of her time at university.

I meet so many new people through my volunteering, and it makes you feel more part of the University. I am so happy I made the decision to come to UWL. I began a course in another university and dropped out, but I now feel like I belong here."
