Care of the Anaesthetic Patient
Overview
This clinically focused credit-bearing course enables healthcare practitioners to develop their knowledge and clinical skills, in order to deliver clinically effective and compassionate care for patients undergoing anaesthesia in the perioperative environment.
This module, which is based at our West London campus, is for staff who have placements in anaesthetics and who have passed the Principles of Anaesthesia CPD course.
Course requirements:
- Currently work in an operating theatre
- Evidence of manager support
- Studied and completed the Level 6 Principles of Anaesthesia CPD course
- UK registered health care professional employed within the perioperative environment.
You will need to be supported by your employer via mentors/assessors who will oversee the development of your knowledge skills and undertake assessments. You will need to engage in this area of practice for approximately 300 hours in order to develop the skills and knowledge prior to assessment, recorded in a Practice Assessment Document (PAD) by your mentor/assessor.
Cost and funding: This fee covers the full course cost.

Assessment method: Written reflective assignment 100% and Clinical Competencies

This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:
Study days are from 9am to 5pm.

- Haemodynamic monitoring, Arterial & Venous cannulation
- Health & Social Policy
- Implications of national and local health policy initiatives on perioperative environment.
- Professional Accountability
- Legal and ethical implications, Professional registration
- Anaesthetic equipment
- Ventilators and modes of ventilation
- Care of ventilated patient
- Care of patients with special needs
- Paediatric anaesthesia
- Anaesthesia in Obstetrics
- Elderly
- Regional anaesthesia
- Pain management.
How you will be assessed
The assessment for this module is:
- Written reflective assignment: 100%
- Clinical Competencies: Completion of the Practice Assessment Document (PAD) is a requirement for successful completion of this module.
Assessment criteria: You will be assessed against the performance criteria identified in the Practice Assessment Document (PAD). The minimal grade is competent. Assessment is undertaken by an appropriate registered perioperative practitioner who is a qualified assessor/mentor.
Study and career progression
This can be taken as a standalone module or the credits can be used towards one of the new and exciting courses below:
- BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice (badged awards available eg Perioperative Practice)
- PgCert/PgDip/MSc Professional Practice (first module in pathway can be studied at L6 - maximum of 20 credits). Badged awards available.
