Principles of Anaesthesia
Overview
The aim of the credit-bearing course is to develop your knowledge and skills when caring for patients receiving an anaesthetic, across a range of surgical specialities.
This module is for staff who have placements in anaesthetics. It covers the basic fundamentals of anaesthesia and needs to be completed prior to studying the Care of the Anaesthetic Patient module.
Course requirements:
- Currently work in an operating theatre
- Evidence of manager support
- Evidence of study at Level 5 (Diploma Level)
- UK registered health care professional employed within the perioperative environment.
You will need to be supported by your employer via mentors/assessors who will oversee the development of your knowledge skills and undertake assessments. You will need to engage in this area of practice for approximately 300 hours in order to develop the skills and knowledge prior to assessment, recorded in a Practice Assessment Document (PAD) by your mentor/assessor.

This cost covers the full course fee.

Assessment method:
- Written reflective assignment: 100%
- Clinical Competencies: Completion of the Practice Assessment Document (PAD) is a requirement for the successful completion of this course
- Assessment criteria: You will be assessed against the performance criteria identified in the Practice Assessment Document (PAD). The minimal grade is competent. Assessment is undertaken by an appropriate registered perioperative practitioner who is a qualified assessor/mentor.

Study dates and times
This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:
Study days are from 9am to 4pm.
The course will focus on:
- The role of the anaesthetic practitioner and patient care
- The historical context of anaesthesia
- Modern anaesthesia, GA/LA/RA, terminology and the triad of anaesthesia
- Basic anaesthetic pharmacology, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
- Introduction to drug calculation
- Administration of drugs, blood and fluids
- Medico-legal and Health & Safety aspects of anaesthesia
- Airway management and ventilation
- Basic anaesthetic equipment
- Monitoring physiological parameters
- Patient care records, anaesthetic responsibilities, receiving and handing over care, patient positioning
- World Health Organisation Surgical Safety Checklist
- Physiological and psychological aspects of pain, an introduction
- Practical airway management
- Introduction to terminology, measurement, physiological parameters, and scientific principles.

I joined the perioperative teaching team at UWL in 2016. Prior to this, I acquired over 40 years of experience working within the NHS. The majority of which was spent in the operating theatre gaining specialist qualifications.
I have had the pleasure of being course lead for three years, and during this time it has been a privilege to guide students to a successful conclusion.

Study and career progression
Principles of Anaesthesia Level 6 can be taken as a standalone course or the credits can be used towards:
- BSc (Hons) Clinical Practice (badged awards available)
- PgCert/PgDip/MSc Clinical Practice (badged awards available).
