Examination of the Newborn
Overview
The aim of this credit-bearing course is to develop expert midwifery practice in undertaking the examination of the healthy baby, in order to confirm wellbeing.
Course requirements: Evidence of study at Level 6 (Degree Level).
Cost and funding: This fee covers the full course cost.
- Sept 24 - Aug 25 fees: £900
- Sept 25 - Aug 26 fees: TBC
Credits: 20
Assessment method: Practice assessment (of clinical competencies) and a written assignment.
Study dates and times
This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:
The course is delivered online. Study days are from 9.30am to 4.30pm.
The course will focus on:
- background and rationale for examining the newborn infant
- observation
- palpation
- auscultation
- common problems and professional issues with regards to the examination of the newborn.

How to apply
All applications for the Examination of the Newborn course commencing on 8th January 2025 will need to be submitted by Friday 8th November 2024.
Midwives will need to accept their unconditional offer and enrol by Friday 6th December 2024.
After your application is accepted and you have been offered a place on the course, you will be sent information about how to enrol. You must complete enrolment before your course starts.
