This accredited course enables midwives to develop competence, based on sound theoretical knowledge and the use of current evidence, to care for women who are critically ill around the time of birth.  

Pathophysiology, therapeutic interventions, monitoring and investigations in relation to each condition of the conditions below will be explored:  

  • Pre-eclampsia 
  • Haemorrhage​ 
  • Thromboembolism 
  • Infection and sepsis 
  • Medical complications of pregnancy 
  • Heart Disease. 

The assessment of fetal well-being and the consideration of the wider context of care such as psychological support and management considerations will also be explored.

Course requirements: Evidence of study at Level 6 (Degree Level).

Cost and funding: This fee covers the full course cost.

  • Sept 24 - Aug 25 fees: £900
  • Sept 25 - Aug 26 fees: TBC

Credits: 20

Assessment method: Folder of evidence (including clinical competence assessment) 100%.

This can be taken as a standalone module or the credits can be used towards one of other courses: 

  • PgCert/PgDip/MSc Clinical Practice (badged awards available e.g. Midwifery) 
  • MSc Advanced Professional Practice (badged awards available eg Midwifery).
