Substance Use and Infectious Diseases
Overview
This accredited course aims to develop or enhance knowledge and understanding in relation to the epidemiology, prevention and treatment of communicable diseases (HIV, Hepatitis B and C and Tuberculosis) within the context of substance misuse.
Course requirements: Evidence of study at Level 5 (Diploma Level).
Cost and funding: This fee covers the full course cost.

Study dates and times
This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:
The course is delivered online with study days running from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm. Please note, study days are subject to change. In this circumstance, students will be notified of date changes in advance.
The course content will include:
- Scientific basis of HIV, Hepatitis B and C and Tuberculosis, transmission categories and treatment
- Drug treatment and HIV, Hep C reduction in drug users and drug-using sex workers
- Pre-post test counselling for HIV and Hep C and TB
- Theories of behaviour change
- Policies and community interventions
- Drug use and sexual health
- Club drugs, novel compounds and unsafe sex
- Crack use, prostitution, safe sex and communicable diseases
- Evidence-based interventions to reduce the risk of contracting and transmitting communicable diseases in the drug-using population
- Harm reduction interventions and theories of behaviour change
- Interactive strategies (eg drama) to improve communication skills, especially with regard to discussing safe sex with clients
- Multiagency working.

I am a chartered psychologist, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Trustee of Addiction Professionals. I have researched the effect of ecstasy polydrug use on mental wellbeing and also published in the areas of gender, binge drinking and sexual behaviour.
I teach on the following modules:

- BSc (Hons) Substance Use and Misuse Studies
- PgCert/PgDip/MSc Clinical Practice (first module in pathway can be studied at L6 - maximum of 20 credits) - badged awards available eg Substance Misuse.
