Overview

Offered online via distance learning, this credit-bearing course will support you to think critically about your service and consider the improvement of your service to enable effective workforce planning.

You will consider the long-term future of your service and your workforce as well as consider ways in which your workforce, delivery, planning and development of your service and workforce can be improved.

You will learn practical tools for improvement and be asked to try these out on a small work-based improvement project.

Course requirements: You are expected to have achieved your degree and have studied to Level 6 (undergraduate). You may also have some experience of Level 7 (postgraduate) study. 

Cost and funding: This fee covers the full course cost.

This course is taught on day release, select a start date to see the study days:

The course will include:

  • an overview of improvement in the context of workforce planning
  • patient pathway modelling
  • 4 lenses on improvement, including, systems thinking, improvement science, design theory and organisational learning
  • complexity theory and the NHS as a complex adaptive system.

Study days are from 9am to 5pm and are delivered online.

Professor Rowan Myron

I am an experienced researcher, writer, presenter and manager with expertise in psychology, improvement science and knowledge mobilisation in healthcare. I use innovative techniques to build team dynamics with staff, researchers and patients. I also lead the University's doctoral research programmes, and have a strong interest in using new technologies to engage frontline staff in learning opportunities.

This CPD can be taken as a standalone module or studied alongside similar CPDs (Context of Strategic Workforce Planning and Leading Workforce Planning) to receive the overarching award PgCert Strategic Workforce Planning.

You may wish to use your PgCert credits and continue on to the MSc Improvement Science by completing a dissertation module.

You should be working in a healthcare setting and be willing to apply the learning to your setting. 

We recommend your application is submitted to the University at least two weeks prior to the start of the course.

After your application is accepted and you have been offered a place on the course, you will be sent information about how to enrol. You must complete enrolment before your course starts.
