What our students say…

I am a Business College of Athens student on the MSc Marine Engineering Management course. The programme's high-calibre professors and comprehensive modules have significantly enriched my technical knowledge. Having actively participated in dry dockings and newbuilding projects as part of my job, I find the course content directly applicable to such tasks. The specialised modules in Marine Technology and Decarbonisation of Shipping have been invaluable, highly relevant to my professional responsibilities as HSQE Superintendent for Maran Tanker’s dual fuel tankers.

Course detail & modules

The Marine Engineering Management MSc is the ideal postgraduate degree for achieving or developing high-calibre careers in the shipping industry.

As the course is also offered on a part-time basis, it is of specific interest to professionals with a busy schedule.

The Marine Engineering Management course is designed for graduates and professionals who seek an in-depth education and knowledge development in the traditional yet developing marine engineering and maritime sectors.

The course involves the study of the theoretical concepts of marine engineering, along with case studies and practical subjects. The modules cover a range of key marine engineering management areas and functions, from procurement management to the decarbonisation of shipping.

There is a particular focus on decision-making for graduates without an engineering background who seek a demanding conversion course.

Additionally, HIMS is linked to BCA College, the oldest Maritime Business School in Greece and Europe. BCA has offered maritime business studies since 1971, and has produced more than 10.000 alumni now working with some of the largest ship management companies in Athens, Limassol, Singapore, Genoa and more.

You will study five compulsory modules and choose from two optional modules depending on your chosen pathway.

Please note, optional modules will run subject to staff availability and a viable number of students opting to take the module.

Compulsory modules

  • Decarbonisation of Shipping

The module starts with the most current decarbonisation concepts and definitions and continues to explain the current shipping regulatory framework (international and regional) and the various private initiatives.

It discusses possible additional shipping decarbonisation regulations for the future and highlights the pitfalls and weaknesses in the current shipping regulations and their side effects for the ship management companies.

Additionally, it provides the latest scientific information on the various decarbonisation methods and possible alternative fuels, shifting through common misinformation and misconceptions.

Finally, the module will highlight how these regulations and decarbonisation efforts are expected to change shipping’s usual modus operandi, its financing and the relationships between shipowners, charterers and others.

  • Foundations of Technical and Procurement Management

This module assists you in understanding completely the activities of a Marine Technical function for the fleet technical management, but also to obtain clear integration of the management of vessels’ procurement of a range of essential goods and services, in accordance with specifications and requirements.

The module gives a global view of the different technical guidance/instructions given to the managed vessels and helps you to understand the different procurement ways of purchasing/supply department with a series of different materials to ensure the unobstructed operation of the managed fleet.

  • Project Management – New Construction & Dry Docking

The module provides evidence of how the different shipbuilding and repairs’ yards respond, perform and plan their major projects for newbuildings and DD/conversions.

It familiarises you with the different procedures followed by shipyards to cooperate with the owner’s representatives during the duration of each project especially for the prompt execution of the production milestones/events.

  • Maintenance and Inspections Management

The module informs you about the “working environment” in the shipping company for the applicable procedures of maintenance and inspections (onboard all managed vessels) and how they are implemented.

You will learn about the other entities which are involved in the vessel’s inspections and maintenance activities and enable Technical and Marine S/Es to cooperate effectively with them.

  • Quality and Safety Management

The module will develop in detail the quality management rules and practices applicable to Marine Operations Management onboard and ashore. It focuses on the rules, regulations and prevailing industry standards towards continual improvement and risk management.

Particular and detailed analysis on the elements of successful management and the importance of marine assurance resulting in the economic growth of an organisation will be provided.

  • Research Methods and Dissertation/Project

The module exposes you to contemporary perspectives in academic research, and in particular focuses on developing a range of skills affecting the identification and formulation of project titles. Special focus is placed on the critical review of available literature and information resources, the use of online databases and other sources. Emphasis is given to the methods used in scientific research, reviewing a range of statistical and non-statistical methods of analysis appropriate for projects in terms of both qualitative and quantitative research. You will become aware of any research issues associated with conducting research. Finally, you will carry out and submit an original piece of independent research work, adding to existing knowledge and demonstrating an ability to select, define and focus on the topic chosen in your research proposal at an appropriate level.

Optional modules

  • Maritime Data Analytics

The module starts with a general framework on how data can be used to improve decision-making. It uncovers the fundamental biases that interfere with the decision-making process and demonstrates how data can help us overcome them.

Then, we discuss the key areas of analytics: from descriptive to predictive to prescriptive and present different tools and case studies for each area.

The module concludes with in-depth case studies from a number of companies that illustrate how those companies managed to overcome any implementation challenges and create tangible value from data science and analytics.

  • Maritime Technology

This module provides you with an all-round practical insight to Maritime Technology and knowledge for working within a systems engineering context as well as on the levels of assurance required for safety and environmental protection aspects of technological development.

Main topics to be dealt with are all issues with a decisive impact in shipping. The technology system ship is focused, giving emphasis to an overview of state-of-the-art technologies, but also looking what the future will bring.
