Busy Freshers Fair gives new and returning students a taste of what’s on offer at UWL

Intro

More than 30 student-led sports teams, clubs, and societies were in Weston Hall at our Ealing site to showcase what they have to offer.

Chloe, UWL student, said:

I’m here representing the Drama society. We have workshops where students can do scriptwriting, improv, make up and costume design. Our biggest thing is our show. Last year we did a fun parody of Scooby Doo. Anyone can get involved, you don’t have to have done acting before.”

Meanwhile over at the ATAL (Alan Turing and Ada Lovelace) Society stand, society administrator Nick who is doing a PhD in computer science after doing both his Bachelors and Masters at UWL explained:

We do meet ups, work on projects, and do hackathon challenges. We help build students’ CVs and Linked In profiles and give guidance if they get stuck on assignments.”

Representing the Psychology Society, student Jasmine commented:

We talk about issues in the world of mental health and learn how the brain works differently. We offer students free mental health first aid training to help people experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. Academics come and give talks, we visit museums and watch movies with the Film Society.”

UWL support services at the fair included volunteering, wellbeing, student money and immigration, study support and careers services, who shared how they can help students reach their potential.

Also present were external partners offering some exciting opportunities for students. Jess from the Royal Ballet and Opera was at the fair to promote the free Young RBO scheme for 16-25s.

Jess said:

Young RBO gives access to £30 tickets to most of our productions, exclusive Young RBO Nights, and the RBO stream for all our productions for free. We want to make ballet and opera more accessible to young people.”

Renee, Fashion Industry: Promotion and Imaging student, said:

This was my first Freshers Fair. What I love most is that the student groups are trying to include neurodiverse students. The free pizza and the pole fitness club have also been great.”
