Celebrating STEM Day - 8 November 2022

Intro

Demand for STEM graduates continues to rise, with an increasing number of roles needed to support sustainable solutions, medical advances and technical innovations.

The University of West London (UWL) offers a range of career-focused undergraduate, postgraduate and research STEM degrees. Courses are led by industry-experienced researchers, and UWL's close connections within each sector helps to ensure students graduate ready to enter STEM careers.

To celebrate STEM Day on 8 November 2022 we asked UWL academics what inspired them to follow a STEM career and what advice they would give to students thinking about studying a STEM subject.

Main

Dr Bernadine Idowu, Associate Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences, advised students thinking about following a STEM career:

Decide what area of STEM you are passionate about and follow it. Believe in yourself and your ability.

Nagham Saeed, Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, said about her inspiration to study STEM:

There are always new areas of research and growth. It can be challenging but it's worth the hard work.

Dr Thomas Madsen, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics and Statistics, highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of STEM subjects:

Be curious and open-minded and enjoy the journey - you don't need to know the end point when you start out!
