Crochet for Kindness: Volunteering activity for the Little Village charity at UWL

Intro

On Wednesday 16 October, the Volunteering team at UWL organised a “Crochet for Kindness” session at the Coffee Union to create and donate baby blankets for the Little Village charity.

The session was open to all levels with materials and demonstrations provided. Robin Pike, who led the event, taught participants how to make a granny square – a simple crochet pattern which can be stitched together to create baby blankets. Other attendees also wrote kind messages to families going through difficult times.

Robin commented,

Little Village were looking for volunteers to put together packages for their baby banks. I asked them if there was anything we could do on campus, and they said, 'well, you could make us baby blankets.' I thought, I know how to crochet, let’s do that!”

Little Village is a charity which aims to provide resources and offer support to families with babies and young children who are struggling financially. Little Village delivers pre-loved items and donations to these families via a network of baby banks or delivery straight to their door.

Since its launch in 2016, Little Village has supported more than 32,000 children. Winter is a particularly difficult time for families in poverty, but this micro-volunteering activity here at UWL will make a small yet tangible difference to families in need.

Jessica, who attended the session, said,

What a lovely idea. Well done!”

One student, Dola, said,

It’s interesting and it’s fun as well!”

The activity will take place again next week on Wednesday 23 October at the Coffee Union from 2pm-5pm and is open to students and staff. Come along and to learn a new skill or improve your crochet skills and help families in need.
