Seven honorary degrees are also being awarded, recognising inspirational people from the worlds of hospitality, law, business, nursing, music, acting and public health.
Today’s honorary graduates are:

Known as the ‘Curry Queen’ of the Indian culinary world, her grandfather opened the first Brilliant Restaurant & Nightclub Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, in the 1950s. His original recipes, cherished and meticulously passed down, still grace the menu of her iconic family-run restaurant, The Brilliant in Southall, established by her father, Gulu, in 1975.
Jayanne Scarrott - a chef who specialises in cake artistry, patisserie, and confectionery. She is founder of Cake Girl London, a thriving bespoke business with a reputation for serving high-end clients and prestigious establishments. Through blending classic techniques with contemporary design, she has created a trusted brand known for delivering stunning, custom-made cakes.
Gary Linton - a Hampshire police officer for 30 years, working mostly in the Criminal Investigation Department. As a Detective Superintendent, he led major crime teams investigating murders and kidnaps; as a Detective Inspector on Special Branch, he investigated terrorist offences; as a Detective Sergeant on the then Regional Crime Squad, he primarily investigated drug trafficking. He set up the ACRO Criminal Records Office, as government ministers wrestled with new policies around keeping and using biometric samples for crime detection.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Student Experience) Sara Raybould commended those graduating on their hard work, energy and personal sacrifice in achieving their goals. She also recognised how crucial the support of loved ones had been.
Sara shared some of the highlights of how UWL's impressive recent growth, with the opening of a School of Medicine and Biosciences, the Hellenic Institute of Maritime Studies and a new Digital Futures Lab, in addition to opening The Townshend Studio as a home for alumnus Pete Townshend’s iconic instruments and synthesisers.
Speaking to those graduating, she offered her congratulations on their achievement:
It is you who make this University the very special place it is. Without you, we would be nothing. I am so very proud of each one of you here today. Make the most of the day and good luck in everything you do.”
