International Women’s Day: Inspire Inclusion
Intro
International Women’s Day’s theme for 2024 is "Inspire Inclusion." This idea is very important to the University of West London; we are proud of our longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion for both staff and students. The University is delighted that 50% of our academic staff and 42% of those in senior roles are women, as well as 60% of our students.

Events marking International Women’s Day this month feature inspiring women with links to UWL, including Emeritus Professor of Nursing at the University of West London, Dame Elizabeth Anionwu.
Taking place on Monday 11 March from 4-7pm at our St Mary’s Road site, "In Conversation with Dame Elizabeth Anionwu" will see her speaking with fellow UWL academic Dr Bernadine Idowu, who is Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences.
Dame Elizabeth will discuss her long and eventful career in nursing, which saw her become UK’s first specialist nurse for people with sickle cell anaemia, as well as her move into academia and the foundation of the Seacole Centre at UWL.
Dame Elizabeth has also played a prominent role in public life, from her successful fundraising campaign to create a statue of Black British nursing pioneer Mary Seacole to her appointment as a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
In 2022, Dame Elizabeth was given the Order of Merit, the first nurse to receive this prestigious honour since Florence Nightingale. She also took part in King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s Coronation procession at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May 2023, where she carried the gold Sovereign Orb.
Dame Elizabeth will share insights with the audience as well as taking their questions during this free event, which is open to staff, students and the public.
