Law students immersed in mock law firm environment at Assessment Centre Workshop
Intro
UWL’s School of Law, in partnership with the UWL Careers Team, held their first Assessment Centre Workshop recently to enhance students’ employability skills by giving them the opportunity to experience what it is like to be interviewed and assessed by a law firm.
Article body
The workshop involved the students being immersed in the assessment process of a fictional law firm. They were given various tasks such as a case study to consider in groups and work out a solution. They then had to nominate someone to present their findings. They were also given situational judgement tests and a psychometric test to undertake.
Finally, each student had an individual panel interview with Karen Shury, Employability and Professional Skills Lead for the School of Law, and Chi Hung Liu and Veejay Mistry from the UWL Careers Team.
The interview questions had real-world relevancy, as they were based on a set of assessment criteria used by city law firms: commercial awareness, communication, motivation and research, resilience, team working and self-awareness.
After their interviews, students were provided with feedback on their performance.
The day was designed so that from the moment they entered the room they were in a mock law firm environment and under scrutiny. Some of the students were very nervous, and later told us they learnt a lot from the workshop,”
Says Karen.
The SOL aims to give students a practical experience of law throughout their time with us, be it within the modules, through assessment or through extra-curricular activities. We are delighted to run these workshops to increase the employability skills of our students when they seek work in the legal sector and to emphasise the importance of preparation for presentations and interviews,”
says Philip Ells, Head of the School of Law.
I found the workshop extremely useful. It put me under pressure and helped me feel more prepared for applying for jobs in law firms in the future,”
says a law student who took part.
