After a welcome and introduction from Sky and Sky Legal, students heard from two trainee lawyers about a day in their lives at the media giant, as well as their career journeys and advice for those early in their law careers.
The students then split into small groups, each supported by someone from a different area of Sky’s legal team, to discuss a case study of a real or semi-real scenario and its legal issues. They then prepared a presentation for the full group about their case and received feedback from senior lawyers.
Students heard presentations from some of the lawyers who helped bring Sky Glass - a streaming TV with Sky inside - to life, including lawyers from the content, distributions and partnerships, tech, operations and consumer teams. They also visited the Innovation Lab to see Sky Glass as well as had a tour of the offices.
Next were some lawyers from the intellectual property, editorial and sports legal teams who spoke about their work at the media company. The day ended with an opportunity for the students to network with lawyers and ask questions.
This was a great opportunity for the students to hear from and speak to lawyers working for Sky,”
says lecturer Karen Shury.
Students were very excited to be there and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
One of the students said:
Getting to visit the Sky offices for the day was an incredible experience, I learned so much.”
I now appreciate that there are many different opportunities in law and understand better the work of an in-house lawyer,”
said another student.
