New name, same great support
New name, same great support
If you want to reach your full potential in your studies, you need support from people in the know. Those who are experienced in supporting the development of study skills and who know first-hand what it’s like to be a student – and that’s exactly what you get with UWL’s Study Support Team.
When you want to improve your sports skills you might use a trainer, or to advance a musical skill you’d get a teacher - well this works in exactly the same way. The UWL Study Support Team is there to help you enhance your academic writing and study skills through 1-2-1 drop-ins, appointments and workshops.
Until recently the team was known as the Engagement Team, but they have now changed their name to Study Support Team. This is to reflect how the range of support has grown to now include specific maths and English workshops and 1-2-1 advice sessions. Workshops support the building of study skills such as Essay writing and structuring, Report writing, Paraphrasing and summarising , Critical writing and Presentation skills.
Peer Mentoring has developed beyond recognition, with hundreds of students being supported by a Peer Mentor studying at a level above them. Peer Mentors and Mentees now have the opportunity to be paired based on their shared personal experiences as well as their course and levels of study.
Alison Griffin, Head of Study Support, said:
I started this team when I graduated ten years ago with a simple aim – to be the support students need to succeed in their studies.
Since then, the range of support we have provided has grown enormously but our core aim remains the same - to create a service where all students feel comfortable about asking study related questions - any questions – big or small, with the confidence that they will receive a warm welcome and the best possible support we can provide.
The team have all been students themselves and take pride and pleasure in sharing their own experience and knowledge to help current students build skills and overcome challenges."
