UWL holds London focused Levelling Up event at the House of Commons

The Centre for Inequality and Levelling Up (CEILUP) – part of the University of West London – recently held a special event at Westminster discussing the topics of Levelling Up in London, inequality in the capital and how they can be addressed by government.

Titled “London After Levelling Up? Inequality, Opportunity and the Future of the Capital”, speakers included Ealing Central and Acton MP Dr Rupa Huq, UWL Vice-Chancellor and President and Principal Ruskin College Professor Peter John CBE and Head of CEILUP Professor Graeme Atherton.
Professor Peter John said:
It was a lively and well attended occasion. A range of speakers addressed a series of important questions about the levels of inequality in the capital including health disparities, housing problems and educational inequities. Questions from the floor were probing and passionate and offered a range of solutions to any incoming government.”
Dr Rupa Huq commented:
It was great to engage with leading academics and experts at our research symposium. Contrary to the assumptions underpinning the Tory Government’s Levelling Up Agenda, they showed that London is one of the region’s most in need of Levelling Up, with some of the highest levels of child poverty, housing unaffordability, and health inequalities.”
Professor Graeme Atherton, Head of the Centre for Inequality and Levelling Up, added:
This event showed that London has its own distinct challenges where levelling is concerned, and we need policies going forward that understand and address them.”
CEILUP is a research centre based at the University of West London. It aims to produce policy-relevant research that can shape approaches to addressing inequality and to level up the UK. The Centre provides ongoing research on the allocation of levelling up funding and approaches to delivering on this policy agenda.
