UWL lecturer’s research article published in the Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal Justice

Intro

Dr Rashid Minhas, Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Psychology at UWL’s School of Human and Social Sciences (SHSS) recently had a research article published in the Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal Justice.

Article body

The article is titled ‘A review of cultural and ethnic bias in investigative decision-making: selected cases’ by Dr Minhas and Lara Frumkin, Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology and Counselling at The Open University.

By presenting a series of real-life cases, the two authors illustrate instances where negative stereotypes have influenced decision-making, leading to unjust outcomes. The cases include instances of "stop and search" encounters, as well as incidents related to the Prevent strategy, which aims to prevent radicalisation.

Our paper emphasises the role of social identity theory in explaining the foundation of prejudicial stereotypes,”

says Dr Minhas.

It explores how religious and racial stereotypes can lead to false-positive assessments of threats, where individuals from certain backgrounds are perceived as more suspicious even when their behaviour does not warrant it.

Overall, the paper highlights the need to address prejudicial stereotypes in police practices to ensure fair and unbiased investigative decision-making, particularly in contexts where ethnic minorities and marginalised groups are disproportionately affected,”

says Dr Minhas.

Rashid’s paper exemplifies the breadth of expertise and interdisciplinary work within SHSS,”

says Head of the School Dr Jennifer Mayer.

His research, stemming from our Justice and Society research cluster, reflects our aim to inclusively create and share knowledge and understanding which impacts meaningfully and sustainably on social and theoretical issues to generate positive societal change.”
