UWL student achieves his dream of working in the aircraft industry with Airbus
Intro
As part of his BSc in Air Transport Management at UWL’s London Geller College of Hospitality and Tourism (LGCHT) student Irvine Kirkpatrick recently finished a placement year at industry leading aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
Main body
Irvine chose the four-year BSc with a placement year because he had always been passionate about aircraft and wanted to stand out from other graduates when applying for jobs in the aviation industry. The UWL Placement and Employment Services and Careers teams helped him find the Airbus internship and apply for it.
Irvine said:
I’m so grateful to UWL staff for their help in getting this internship. I have really enjoyed it. One highlight was a visit to the Beluga loading facility, an aircraft used to transport wings from Broughton to Hamburg and Toulouse. I could not stop smiling. I felt like a kid in a candy store!"
In September, Irvine will start his final year of study at LGCHT and will be applying for graduate jobs with Airbus.
Irvine continued:
I have enjoyed the course, been ahead of my deadlines, and passionate about the work, but the internship has given me more of an industry approach to it. I have got all this knowledge from my placement to apply to my work. In my final year, I want to learn as much as possible to take back with me into the industry.”
Ash Mistry, Senior Lecturer in Aviation and Tourism at LGCHT, said:
Irvine has shown great motivation, maturity and desire to secure this placement at Airbus. The industry placement route on our aviation course can bring amazing opportunities, where students experience and enhance their understanding of the industry first hand. It also sets our graduates up for the future with a year’s worth of experience combined with their degree. We look forward to welcoming Irvine back for his final year.”
