Student-led societies allow students to connect with people through common interests and develop skills and hobbies. In addition, the committees for each society are an opportunity to acquire organisational skills, giving students transferrable skills and experience that will help them in future careers. The University of West London Students’ Union (UWLSU) has more than 30 societies – and the list keeps growing. Whether it’s sports, arts, community or faith, there’s something for everyone.
Isabella, from the women’s football team, the Ravens, told us why she loves football at UWL:
We’re really fun. Everyone gets along really well. All levels can join!”
Conner, the chairperson of the gaming society, loves meeting new people and connecting with other students in the society:
We’re pretty much just a place for students to go, find common interests among gaming and nerd culture and kind of just make a little community and little events now and then.”
Olivia, events manager of the LGBTQ+ society, said:
We’re open to all students, whether they’re part of the community or not. We’re a social society so you can meet new people, learn about people potentially and just get to know each other and have fun.”
Students were excited to join new societies and spend their spare time having fun. Criminology and Forensic Psychology student Victoria was hoping to get involved in a music society:
I just love music in general. It’s like a hobby to me anyway so a nice break from just studying and university.”
The film society’s communications manager, Ellie, was keen for new students to join:
We try our best to facilitate everyone’s interests. We do collaborations and we’re open to doing more collaborations with other societies, so it also brings together... everyone! I think films can do that and it’s beautiful to put that in a society.”
Student services were also at the Refreshers Fair to inform students of the support systems in place.
Wellbeing councillor Michael said:
Wellbeing is a suite of services that the university offers to help support students in need, particularly with their mental health, but also with disability, faith and welfare. It’s a pretty comprehensive service – most of them you can access without a waitlist.”
Students can find lots of fitness opportunities at our sports centre. Eliana, who works at the sports centre, talked about the importance of health and exercise for students who struggle with stress:
It’s very easy for students to become anxious and depressed. When you have time for yourself to join, for example, a salsa class, it’s full of energy – it’s another world; it revives you! You need that to go back to your plan, your aim, your goal [...] Exercise is good for the mind!”
