Musical Theatre graduate Lizzy Parker a “cover” in West End musical Next to Normal

Intro

BA (Hons) Musical Theatre graduate Lizzy Parker recently had the chance as "cover" to perform in the musical Next to Normal at London Wyndham’s Theatre. The rock musical, with book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, centres on a mother, Diana, who struggles with worsening bipolar disorder and the effects this has on her family.

Lizzy, who graduated in 2018 from the London College of Music (LCM) at the University of West London (UWL), was a standby for Diana’s high school age daughter, Natalie, meaning she was an offstage understudy.

I was never on stage unless I was doing the show, which was a new experience for me and a challenge,”

explained Lizzy.

I made my debut mid-show, for Act 2! I had about half an hour from finding out to getting into costume, microphone and on stage. We did a cover run a few weeks prior to this, where all four standbys got to do the show in full to an audience of family and friends, but this was the first time doing it properly and with most of the principal cast."

Speaking about the show, Lizzy said:

Next to Normal is a show that carries a lot of weight. It is heavy and emotional but also extremely cathartic. It was my West End debut, and I am so proud that I got to do it, especially as part of the original West End cast.”

Senior Lecturer in Performing Arts at LCM Alex Loveless commented:

This was a very challenging and high-profile assignment. We’re so proud of Lizzy’s success!”
