Volunteering stories - Helen Rankin Graham

Opportunities: The Lullaby Trust, Ealing Eagles and GoodGym.
I have been a Fundraising and Events Volunteer for the Lullaby Trust for the past year. The Lullaby Trust is a charity that raises awareness of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), provides healthcare professionals and families with advice on safer sleep for babies and supports bereaved families. Before studying Health Promotion and Public Health, I was training to be a Midwife and I had shared the Lullaby Trust’s advice with families during the postnatal period.
In my second year at University, the V Team came to speak to my class and inspired me to become a volunteer. I approached the Lullaby Trust in March 2018 and started in April 2018. My main responsibility has been to provide administrative support to the Fundraising and Events Team at the head office, but I have also attended and helped out at lots of exciting events!
Being a volunteer has taught me so much and my confidence has grown. Everyone at the head office has been so welcoming and friendly and I have had the opportunity to meet so many inspiring people. Recently, a full-time position became available at the Lullaby Trust and after a successful application and interview process, I was offered the job. I am going to be the Challenge Events Officer, only a couple of weeks after finishing University. Volunteering has enabled me to give something back but has also provided me with a career path and I am so grateful to the V Team for encouraging me to become a volunteer.
Attending the V Team Awards was amazing! It was such a special evening and I enjoyed meeting other volunteers and celebrating with them. Recently, I have also started volunteering in my local community – as an Ealing Eagles running volunteer, supporting beginner runners and with GoodGym Ealing, who regularly run to different local charities to help with tasks such as gardening and painting. I hope to continue volunteering locally once I start working full-time.
