Volunteering stories - Irene Hebok

Opportunities: Hanwell Hootie, Outreach Ealing, Friendship Tuesdays.
'I have learnt a lot from my volunteering experience. For instance, when I was working with the security team at the Hanwell Hootie Festival handing out wrist bands I saw many things. It was an eye-opener, especially as I would like to get involved in festivals and events work after I graduate.
My experience at the Hilton Hotel with Outreach Ealing was amazing and setting up the events was very educational. One of the volunteers was known as Auntie and she was a sweetheart. She volunteered with MEND (Muslim Engagement and Development).
Auntie is 67 years old and I was helping her a bit. As I was leaving she tapped me on my shoulder and then gave me a very big hug. It was very heartwarming.
I am thankful to these organisations for giving me these opportunities and I will continue to volunteer because while my course provides a sound technical grounding, I appreciate that there is no substitute for practical experience and knowledge for a future working in events or for my personal growth.
I volunteered last year in my local church for Friendship Tuesdays. I made tea and soup for the elderly and also helped in the church office.
All this volunteering helped me learn about the kind and generous work my community does for the elderly and the homeless. It made me aware that our time spent volunteering makes a massive and positive difference to people around us.'
