BSc (Hons) International Tourism Management student shares her experiences of volunteering.
Main body
During the past two years at UWL, my involvement as a volunteer with the Volunteering Team has not only been a wonderful experience, but also has reminded me that helping others is incredibly fulfilling and motivating.
My motivation to volunteer while at university stems from my experience supporting an orphanage many years ago. Reflecting on this experience, at first, my deficiency in interacting with children became quickly apparent, but the time I spent with the young ones soon helped me develop my communication skills and confidence around younger people.
UWL has given me further opportunities to expand my knowledge and understanding of the wider concept of volunteering. I have gained the required skills and qualities to be a good leader while developing my attributes of empathy and responsibility. I have taken part in many events across diverse settings, from gardening and tree planting, crafting and event support, to helping the elderly, which has taught me tremendous amounts, and particularly improved my confidence and interpersonal skills.
Meeting like-minded students is another bonus of volunteering. I have met incredible fellow students with whom I have shared these experiences. There is a real sense of togetherness within the group and among the people in the community.
My altruism has also allowed me to assess my own capabilities and evaluate my skills and strengths. For example, through improving my approach towards others, becoming more proactive and more engaged with my peers. Giving time back to the community has developed my self-worth and provided me with many transferable skills for my future career.
The Volunteering Team is amazing and very friendly! They have the right framework to help students develop their skills and provide them with a career path. I also really enjoyed my first Volunteering Awards ceremony.
